Salat Times ("we", "our", or "us") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how our mobile application (the "App") handles your information when you use it. We are committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy.
By using the App, you agree that your information is handled in accordance with this policy.
Information Collection and Use
The App requires certain permissions to provide its core functionality. However, we do not collect, store, or transmit your personal data to any external servers of our own. We operate no backend. All of your settings, history, and content stay on your device.
1. Location Data
- Why we need it: The App uses your precise location (latitude and longitude) to calculate accurate daily prayer times, determine the correct Qibla direction, and find nearby mosques.
- How it is used: Your location is used on your device, and is sent to the prayer times and mosque search services listed below only to answer the request you made. We do not track your location in the background. We do not store your location history, nor do we share it with any third parties beyond those services.
- You can skip location access entirely and pick your city by hand — that search runs fully offline from data bundled in the App.
2. Device Sensors
- Why we need it: The App uses your device's magnetometer (compass) and accelerometer to calculate and display the direction of the Qibla.
- How it is used: Sensor data is processed dynamically in real-time when you open the Qibla screen. It is not recorded or transmitted anywhere.
3. Notifications, Alarms, and Battery
- Why we need them: The App needs notification permission to alert you when it is time for prayer, exact-alarm permission so the Adhan is not delayed, and (optionally) a battery optimisation exemption so alarms survive aggressive power saving.
- How they are used: Notification triggers are scheduled locally on your device using Android's alarm management system. None of these permissions are used to collect anything.
- Every permission the App asks for is optional. Refusing one reduces what the App can do, but never blocks setup or locks you out.
4. Phone State
- Why we need it: So Adhan playback pauses instead of talking over an incoming or ongoing call.
- How it is used: The App only reads whether a call is active. It does not read phone numbers, call history, or your device identifiers.
5. Local Storage (Preferences, Cache, and Downloads)
- Why we need it: The App saves your preferences (calculation method, theme, fonts, language, selected location), caches prayer time data, and stores content you choose to download — Adhan audio files, Mushaf pages, Azkar audio, and Adhan screen backgrounds.
- How it is used: This data is stored in your device's local storage (Android DataStore, Room database, and the App's private files directory) so the App works offline and remembers your settings. Prayer tracking history, tasbeeh counts, and Azkar counters are likewise stored only on your device.
- Android backup is deliberately disabled for this App. Your settings and cached data are never copied to Google's cloud backup or transferred to another device.
- Files you explicitly choose to save (an exported month timetable, a copy of an Adhan, or a dhikr audio clip) are written where you tell the system to put them, and are yours to manage.
Third-Party Services
The App contacts the following services. Each of them will see your device's IP address, as any internet request does, and each has its own privacy practices — please refer to their own policies.
- AlAdhan API (
api.aladhan.com) When: fetching prayer times and Hijri calendar data Sent: your coordinates and the date - Esri World Geocoding
(
geocode.arcgis.com) When: searching for nearby mosques Sent: your coordinates and the search radius - OpenFreeMap / ArcGIS tiles When: drawing the map on the Mosques screen — the default Sent: the map area being viewed
- Google Maps (Google) When: only if you choose Google as the map source on the Mosques screen Sent: the map area being viewed
- jsDelivr CDN (
cdn.jsdelivr.net) When: downloading Mushaf pages, if you choose an edition Sent: the pages requested - HadeethEnc (
hadeethenc.com) When: downloading a hadith translation into a language other than Arabic or English, if you ask for one Sent: the hadith number and the language code - GitHub / Internet Archive When: downloading Adhan audio or streaming Azkar audio, if you choose to Sent: the files requested
- jsDelivr CDN / GitHub When: downloading a mosque photo for the Adhan screen, if you choose one Sent: the photo requested
- Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google) When: receiving general messages from the developer, such as news of a new version Sent: a code Google gives your device so messages can reach it
- Google Play Billing When: only if you choose to donate Sent: handled entirely by Google Play
- Google Drive (Google) When: only if you connect it for cloud backup, and only when you back up, restore or delete Sent: your backup file, sent to a hidden app folder in your own Google Drive
Notes on the entries that involve another company's own service:
- Firebase Cloud Messaging is used only to deliver occasional messages from the developer — news of a new version, or a greeting on a religious occasion. Every message goes to all users alike; the App only receives them and never sends anything back. We do not use it to identify you, we do not attach your location or settings to it, and the App shows no commercial advertising.
- Google Maps is an alternative map you can turn on yourself; the Mosques screen uses OpenFreeMap until you change it. While the default is selected, nothing about the map reaches Google. The mosque markers and the search radius are drawn by the App from the data described above — choosing Google changes which map they are drawn on, not what is searched or stored.
- Donations are optional and processed entirely by Google Play (or by the external payment links on the About screen). The App never sees or stores your payment details. Donation purchases are consumed so no purchase record is kept beyond what Google Play holds.
Downloads of Mushaf pages, Adhan files, Azkar audio, and Adhan screen backgrounds only ever happen because you asked for them. Nothing is fetched in the background without your action.
Children's Privacy
The App is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, children included.
Backup and Restore
The App can save your settings and data to a single file so you can move them to another phone. This only ever happens when you ask for it — there is no automatic or background backup.
- The file holds your settings, and the things you made yourself: your prayer log, tasbeeh counts, custom dhikr, saved locations, favourites and reading position.
- You can also choose to include downloaded files — Quran pages and adhan sounds you added — so they do not have to be downloaded again. These are off by default, and the Quran pages in particular can make the file very large.
- The file is created on your device and saved wherever you choose. It is never uploaded to any server, and we never see it.
- If you set a password, the data section is encrypted on your device with AES-GCM, using a key derived from your password with PBKDF2. The password itself is not stored anywhere, and there is no way to open the file without it.
- If you share the file with another app or service yourself, its contents go with it, and that service's policy then applies.
Google Drive backup (optional)
You can also keep a copy of the same backup in your own Google Drive. This is off until you connect a Google account on the Google Drive backup screen.
- The App asks Google for one permission only,
drive.appdata. It lets the App use a hidden folder in your Drive that only this App can open. The App cannot see, read or change any other file in your Drive. - The backup holds the same settings and data as the file above, but never the downloaded files (Quran pages and adhan sounds).
- The file goes from your phone straight to Google. It never passes through a server of ours, and we never see it.
- The App reads your Google account's email address only to show you which account the backup is in.
- You can delete the backup from the App at any time with "Delete backup from Drive". "Disconnect" takes the App's access back; the backup stays in your Drive until you delete it.
Salat Times' use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Your Google data is used only to save and restore your backup, and is never sold, shared with anyone, or used for advertising.
Data Security
The security of your data is important to us. Since your location data and personal settings never leave your device — except for the requests listed above, which carry no account or name (the only identifiers involved are the code Google gives your device to deliver notifications, which exists for that alone and does not reveal who you are, and, if you turn on Google Drive backup, your own Google account, which only Google sees) — there is no server of ours that could be breached and expose your data.
